The gal: Kari Luna is a writer, musician, yoga teacher and resident whimsicologist. It’s been said that everything’s more playful when she’s around. It’s also been said that, after a decade of touring in garage bands and writing commercials, she’s finally using her imagination for good. That’s debatable, of course. It depends on which story she’s writing.
The creds: Born under the big, blue skies of Texas, Kari graduated with an official degree in Journalism, minor in English and an unofficial degree in rock from the University of North Texas. After that it was off to the ad agency race during the week and into a touring van on the weekends. By day she was the go-to gal for “campaigns packed with pop culture” and by night she was living in it. Her copywriting work has been seen in newspapers, televisions and browsers across the country. Her bands are all famous in Europe, of course. And her fiction runs the gamut from wry tales for adults to more whimsical works for the younger set.
The whimsicologist: Kari loves to inspire the smirk. She also thinks there’s not nearly enough whimsy around, especially in North America. That’s why she puts it in her writing – and why she’s pursuing a degree in whimsicology. Since it’s a lifelong program, you can find her studying, quite often, at a café, park or French bakery near you. (Pastry is the epitome of whimsy.)
The life: When she’s not writing, Kari teaches yoga (happy little yogis), dreams of building a “cupcake couch” and tries to make friends with squirrels. Whether her fingers are dancing away, writing her next novel, or finding a new way to sell software, she does everything with enthusiasm. And a wish for an emu.
Kari and her strawberry blonde hair live in Portland, Oregon where almost everyone, much to her delight, wears striped knee socks.
